Not long after the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, many Republicans, especially those loyal to former President Donald Trump, have sought to downplay the riots or pin the blame on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. According to a new report, the former president is conspiring with House Republican leadership to launch an investigation on the Democratic Party regarding the riots.
A report by The Daily Beast reveals that should the Republican Party retake the majority in the House after the midterm elections, they are conspiring with the former president to launch an investigation into the Democrats and the FBI over the insurrection. This comes as the current probe by the congressional committee into the insurrection is closing in on the twice-impeached former president and his allies over his attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
With the recent emergence of the scheme surrounding fake electors from states that went to Joe Biden, Trump is reportedly looking to turn the investigation on the Democrats. Republicans and right-wing media outlets have often attempted to pin the blame on Pelosi for the insurrection, as well as claim that the Jan. 6 riots were a “false flag operation” or staged by the FBI.
The report also reveals that the former president is keen on punishing those who are investigating his anti-democratic efforts while continuing to push conspiracy theories rather than seek accountability and “exculpate Trumpist perpetrators as fully as they can get away with.”
This also follows the recent rally the former president held in Texas, where Trump made mention of pardoning Jan. 6 defendants should he return to the White House in 2024. The former president also issued a statement at the same time, which could potentially serve as evidence for the congressional committee, saying that it was unfortunate that his then-vice president Mike Pence failed to overturn the 2020 election.
According to New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, the former president is in a “burn it all down mode.”
Haberman explained that the recent statement raised questions about the process that led to the statements being published as it not only revealed a lot to the congressional committee but also to the lawyers involved in the civil suits against the former president.
“So you take all of that together and you see the portrait of somebody who really doesn’t care anymore and wants to put it all on his terms and who knows he can keep pushing the bounds and there basically so far – other than losing the election, which is not nothing, but other than losing the election – there haven’t been that many penalties,” explained Haberman.
