As the House Committee continues its work in investigating the Capitol insurrection, twice-impeached former President Donald Trump has sought to stall the probes through his lawsuits. The former president recently pleaded with a federal judge to further slow down the investigation being done by the committee.
Politico reports Tuesday that the former president pleaded with a federal judge to conduct a per-document review of the records of the White House under his presidency that are being obtained by the House Committee. It should be noted that such a review could take months, further slowing down the investigation of the panel.
In a filing made Tuesday, the former president’s lawyer Jesse Binnall made a false claim that the FBI and the Senate found no evidence of coordinated effort with the Trump White House to overturn the 2020 elections on January 6. Binnall’s reply is the last scheduled written argument before DC federal judge Tanya Chutkan is to hold a hearing Thursday for the lawsuit filed by the former president, citing that the documents being sought are protected by executive privilege.
The Biden White House has repeatedly rejected Trump’s claims of executive privilege and authorized the National Archives to release documents related to January 6.
“Trump’s lawyers also attempt to make a political slam against Biden, for the Justice Department defending the (National Archives and Records Administration) decision that the Trump records should be turned over to the House this month,” according to CNN. The network noted that the former president made the National Archives the defendant in the suit, saying that it must respond in court and therefore be represented by the DOJ.
Hundreds of insurrectionists have been arrested and detained since the insurrection that left five people dead and dozens of law enforcement officials injured. Some of the insurrectionists have been charged with assaulting police officers who defended the Capitol. The most recent arrest made by the FBI was an insurrectionist known for his large frame and dressed in MAGA, and Proud Boy merchandise was arrested in his home in Tennessee.
Insurrectionist Joshua John Portlock was arrested by the feds on charges of violent assault. In photos and video footage, Portlock was seen attacking police officers during the siege.
